چکیده

Current methods of measuring spinal curvature are limited. Radiographic analysis is associated with significant radiation exposure and clinic based methods, such as inclinometers and goniometers can only resolve static postures [1]. Laboratory systems, capable of dynamic measures are either constrained by line-of-sight or a clearly defined operating field, which may be affected by the presence of metals [2]. There is a need for new methods of dynamic curvature measurement which overcome the limitations outlined above. Fibre-optics has long been used by the animation industry to map body motion. It is feasible that such technology could be used to measure spinal curvature. The aim of this study is to determine the reliability of using fibre-optic sensors to dynamically measure lumbar curvature and its accuracy compared to a video based method (Vicon).

Raman Spectra of a PMMA Microstructured Optical Fibre and Direct Measurement of Its Gain Coefficient

A polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microstructured polymer optical fiber (mPOF) is fabricated and characterized. Using the cut-back technique the fiber loss is measured which is higher than the step-index silica fibers. Through a novel experimental scheme, the backward Stokes spectrum of the fabricated mPOF is recorded over a range exceeding 3000 cm‑1 during the cut-back method and compared ...

Curvature sensor for the measurement of the static corneal topography and the dynamic tear film topography in the human eye.

A system to measure the topography of the first optical surface of the human eye noninvasively by using a curvature sensor is described. The static corneal topography and the dynamic topography of the tear film can both be measured, and the topographies obtained are presented. The system makes possible the study of the dynamic aberrations introduced by the tear film to determine their contribut...

Dynamic two-axis curvature measurement using multicore fiber Bragg gratings interrogated by arrayed waveguide gratings.

We describe the use of arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) in the interrogation of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) for dynamic strain measurement. The ratiometric AWG output was calibrated in a static deflection experiment over a +/-200 microepsilon range. Dynamic strain measurement was demonstrated with a FBG in a conventional single-mode fiber mounted on the surface of a vibrating cantilever and on...

Implementation of vectorial bend sensors using long-period gratings UV-inscribed in special shape fibres

We report the implementation of vector bending sensors using long-period gratings (LPGs) UV-inscribed in flat-clad, four-core and D-shaped fibres. Our experiments reveal a strong fibre-orientation dependence of the spectral response when such LPGs are subjected to dynamic bending, which provided an opportunity to realize curvature measurement with direction recognition.

Measurement of submicrometre diameters of tapered optical fibres using harmonic generation.

Applications of subwavelength-diameter optical fibres in nonlinear optics require precise knowledge of the submicrometre fibre waist diameter. We demonstrate a new technique for optical measurement of the diameter based on second- and third-harmonic generation with an accuracy of better than 2%. To generate the harmonic light, inter-modal phase matching must be achieved. We find that the phase-...
